Episode 7 – Chapter One Review: The Complete Story
Reviewing imperfetto, passato prossimo, and a taste of passato remoto
Welcome amici!
If this post has landed in your inbox, you may be seeing something new from me. Until now, you’ve mainly heard from me through the Impariamo l’italiano piano piano podcast. Starting today, you’ll also receive these written posts through Substack. Think of them as a companion to the podcast, a place where you can review, read along, and even download extra resources if you choose.
With Episode 7, we celebrate the completion of Chapter One. Over the past six episodes, you’ve followed Mariella’s routines, her memories of Nonna Maria, the mysterious package, and the letter that may change everything.
Along the way, you’ve:
Heard how the imperfetto paints scenes and memories
Practiced how the passato prossimo marks decisive actions
Touched on reflexive verbs that add nuance to thought and action
This special review episode brings it all together. You’ll hear the full story of Chapter One in three different ways, giving you a chance to measure how far you’ve come and and to enjoy the rhythm of Italian storytelling.
🎧 What you will hear in Episode 7
Story segment: Complete Chapter One in Italian only
(imperfetto and passato prossimo)Bilingual experience: English followed by Italian for confirmation and comparison
Literary Italian: A taste of passato remoto, the tense of books and storytelling
Practice focus: Listening for imperfetto, passato prossimo, reflexives, and even passato remoto as the story shifts formats.
Quick recap of the story
Mariella lives with her mother Anita in Florence, working at a travel agency but longing for something more meaningful. She often remembers her Nonna Maria, who worked at the old library and read stories to children.
On a stormy autumn evening, her friend Zina arrives with a mysterious package. Inside is a letter from a law office inviting Mariella to the reading of her grandmother’s will.
With Chapter One complete, we are left with the question:
What did Nonna Maria leave her?
📘 Grammar notes: Recognition across the story
Episode 7 is less about learning new forms and more about seeing how much you recognize in context.
Imperfetto: background, habits, ongoing states
Mariella viveva a Firenze. (Mariella lived in Florence.)
Spesso passeggiava per le strade. (She often strolled through the streets.)
Passato prossimo: completed, specific actions
Ha aperto la porta. (She opened the door.)
Ha letto la lettera. (She read the letter.)
Reflexive verbs: actions on oneself
Si è sistemata i capelli. (She fixed her hair.)
Si chiedeva perché. (She was wondering why.)
Passato remoto (preview only): more formal, literary style
Mariella prese il pacchetto e lo aprì con cura. (Mariella took the package and opened it carefully.)
Even if you haven’t studied passato remoto yet, notice how it sounds more distant, elegant, and literary compared to the conversational passato prossimo.
🗣️ Try this while listening
In the Italian-only version, jot down three examples each of imperfetto, passato prossimo, and reflexive verbs.
In the bilingual version, compare your guesses with the English lines.
In the literary version, underline the verbs you think are passato remoto.
