After spending three episodes exploring di, it’s time to turn to another of Italian’s smallest - and most useful - prepositions: a.

At first glance, it seems straightforward. It often translates as to or at. But as soon as you begin to use it, you discover that it quietly appears everywhere.

In these episodes, we have begun to build a practical framework for understanding a.

In Part 1A, we looked at a with cities, indirect objects, time expressions, and some of the most common fixed expressions you’ll hear every day in Italian.

Then, in Part 1B, we continue with the articulated forms (al, allo, alla...), meet some of the verbs that naturally take a, and return to the summer market for the next chapter in Carlo, Sara and Luca’s story. Along the way, you’ll hear today’s grammar appear naturally in the dialogue.

By the end of the episode, you’ll have a much clearer picture of one of the most common little words in Italian, and another collection of expressions to add to your growing toolkit.

As always, we’ll take it one step at a time.
